La Casa Zuno es una casona histórica de arquitectura neocolonial ubicada en Guadalajara, Jalisco. Hoy en día funciona como la sede del Archivo Histórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG). Fue construida en 1923 por orden del entonces gobernador de Jalisco, José Guadalupe Zuno Hernández, y su esposa Carmen Arce. Era la primera vez que la visitaba y me pareció preciosa.
La Casa Zuno is a historic neocolonial mansion located in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the Historical Archive of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG). It was built in 1923 by order of the then-governor of Jalisco, José Guadalupe Zuno Hernández, and his wife, Carmen Arce. It was my first time visiting, and I found it absolutely beautiful.
Este 12 de septiembre nos reunimos en Casa Zuno para el evento “Tómate la foto con la FIL”. Después de 20 años, ¡nos volvimos a tomar la foto! : D
Tuve la suerte de participar en la edición de 2006 cuando estaba en la universidad, y revivir ese momento me trajo recuerdos hermosos y muy divertidos. Recuerdo perfectamente que era el Día del Libro y que las fotos se tomaban afuera de Rectoría; corrí para conseguir un lugar en la fila con mi ejemplar de El Hobbit. Estaba enamorada de ese libro porque era la primera vez que leía la historia y, además, ¡era una edición ilustrada! *u*
This September 12th, we gathered at Casa Zuno for the ‘Get Your Photo Taken with the FIL’ event. After 20 years, we took the photo again! : D
I was lucky enough to participate in the 2006 edition when I was in college, and reliving that moment brought back beautiful and super fun memories. I remember perfectly that it was World Book Day and the photos were being taken outside the Rector’s Building; I ran to get a spot in line with my copy of The Hobbit. I was in love with that book because it was my first time reading the story, and plus, it was an illustrated edition! *u*
Esta es la foto que tomé cuando colocaron el mosaico con las imágenes de todos nosotros y nuestros libros favoritos en 2006. Como verán, ¡no llevaba una buena cámara! :´D Pero me hizo una ilusión enorme encontrarme ahí en la pared junto a tantas personas amantes de la lectura. Me había escapado de la escuela solo para ir a verlo y tomarle la foto. Recuerdo muy bien que justo ese día ¡se fue la luz en toda la expo! hahaha. Pero fue solo un momento; el equipo de la FIL resolvió el problema de inmediato.
Lo bueno es que gracias a un amigo, ¡pude conseguir la foto original! que me tomaron en aquella época, ¡20 años después! :0000 No se imaginan la emoción que me dio verla tan nítida y revivir ese momento.
This is the photo I took when they put up the mosaic featuring pictures of all of us and our favorite books back in 2006. As you can see, I wasn’t carrying a very good camera! :´D But I was so thrilled to find myself up there on the wall alongside so many fellow book lovers. I had actually snuck out of school just to go see it and take the picture. I remember so clearly that right on that day, the power went out across the entire expo! Hahaha. But it was only for a moment; the FIL team resolved the issue right away.
The best part is that thanks to a friend, I was able to get the original photo they took of me back then, 20 years later! :0000 You can’t imagine how excited I was to see it so sharp and clear, and to relive that moment all over again.
Volviendo al presente, tomarme la foto para celebrar su aniversario y conocer la Casa Zuno fue toda una fantasía. La verdad me costó un poco de trabajo elegir el libro con el que posaría; hoy en día tengo tantos favoritos… Así que en mis redes hice una encuesta con 4 opciones para que me ayudaran a elegir, donde expuse mi opinión de por qué cada uno era especial para mí. Y finalmente, elegí: La muerte del personaje de Enzo Vogrincic. Ha sido una de las publicaciones más recientes que he leído. Algo que me gusta mucho es que tiene una manera de escribir muy interesante. Además de haber conocido su trabajo como actor uruguayo en la película La sociedad de la nieve, este libro tiene un toque muy personal alrededor de la vida y trayectoria de Enzo. Cada página se siente como si viajaras con tu mejor amigo; es una lectura muy refrescante y, no sé si fue con intención, pero hubo partes que me hicieron reír muchísimo. Ya después les compartiré mi reseña completa. : )
Back to the present, taking the photo to celebrate its anniversary and getting to visit Casa Zuno was a total dream. Honestly, it was a bit tough to choose which book to pose with; these days I have so many favorites… So I ran a poll on my social media with 4 options so everyone could help me pick, sharing my thoughts on why each one was special to me. [You can read the full newsletter here BANG! ].
And finally, I chose: La muerte del personaje by Enzo Vogrincic. It’s been one of the most recent publications I’ve read. Something I really love about it is that he has a super interesting writing style. Beyond knowing his work as a Uruguayan actor in the movie Society of the Snow, this book has a very personal touch centered around Enzo’s life and journey. Every page feels like traveling with your best friend; it’s a really refreshing read and, I don’t know if it was intentional, but there were parts that made me laugh out loud. I’ll share my full review with you all later! : )
Al llegar, nos recibieron con un cafecito cortesía de Café La Flor de Córdoba : D. Había una mesa con galletas y postres, y una hielera con bebidas refrescantes para compartir mientras esperábamos nuestro turno. También pusieron varios espejos con frases muy bonitas para tomarte fotos.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a nice warm coffee courtesy of Café La Flor de Córdoba : D. There was a table set with cookies and pastries, as well as a cooler filled with refreshing drinks to share while we waited for our turn. They also set up several mirrors with really lovely quotes so you could take photos.
En una parte del patio principal colocaron unas letras enormes de la FIL para exhibir las fotos de la primera edición. Para mi mala suerte, no imprimieron la mía :´D… De verdad me daba mucha ilusión verla ahí, pero supongo que no les dio tiempo de sacarlas todas, por que había muy poquitas.
Finalmente me tomé la foto actual e imprimieron una versión en imán al momento con el diseño del pais invitado de este año que es Italia. Es un lindo recuerdo, además de que nos dieron un montón de regalitos por participar. : D
In one section of the main courtyard, they set up huge FIL letters to display the photos from that first edition. Unfortunately for me, they didn’t print mine :´D… I was really looking forward to seeing it up there, but I guess they didn’t have enough time to print them all, since there were very few on display.
Finally, I took my photo for this year, and they printed a magnet version right on the spot with the design of this year’s guest country, Italy. It’s such a lovely keepsake, plus they gave us a bunch of nice little gifts for participating! : D
Me encantó ser parte de esta celebración y estar entre lectores en un lugar tan bonito. Como nunca antes había venido, aproveché para recorrer algunos salones antes de irme: vi los premios que ha ganado la FIL y lo que más amé… ¡fue su cocina!
I loved being part of this celebration and being surrounded by fellow readers in such a beautiful place. Since I had never been there before, I took the opportunity to explore a few rooms before leaving: I saw the awards that the FIL has won over the years, and what I loved the most… was its kitchen!
Amo la tecnología y lo moderno, pero las casas antiguas y la manera en que eran diseñadas me fascinan. Esta cocina era enorme, con azulejos hermosísimos y hasta un horno de piedra.
No puedo imaginar cómo vivían en esta hermosa casa. La chica que cuidaba esa sala me platicó varias historias de la familia Zuno y me contó cómo el propietario, además de querer un hogar bonito, buscaba representar el arte y la cultura en cada habitación, incluso en la cocina. I love technology and modern design, but old houses and the way they were crafted absolutely fascinate me. This kitchen was huge, with beautiful handcrafted tiles and even a stone oven.
I can’t even imagine what it was like to live in such a beautiful home. The guide looking after that room shared several stories about the Zuno family with me, explaining how the owner, besides wanting a lovely home, sought to represent art and culture in every single room, even the kitchen. Para cerrar con broche de oro, me fui a desayunar a uno de mis lugares favoritos: Peligro al Fondo. Me encanta porque se siente como comer en un jardín. Me pedí un café, un juguito de guayaba y, para comer, un Shakshuka al estilo mexicano que estaba ¡riquísimo! Nunca lo había probado; estuve investigando y supe que es un plato tradicional del norte de África y Oriente Medio, hecho con huevos escalfados en una salsa de tomate picante y especiada : 3
Definitivamente es una receta que debo aprender a preparar.
To top it all off, I went to have breakfast at one of my favorite spots: Peligro al Fondo. I love it because it feels like dining in a garden. I ordered a coffee, a little guava juice, and for my meal, a Mexican-style Shakshuka that was absolutely delicious! I had never tried it before; I did a little research and found out it’s a traditional dish from North Africa and the Middle East, made with poached eggs in a spicy, seasoned tomato sauce : 3
It’s definitely a recipe I need to learn how to make.
